We consulted with Naturopathic Doctor Michael Major about how to treat scars and stretch marks. In our last consultation with Dr. Major in Men’s Health – Naturopathic Medicine for Optimal Wellness, he explained how naturopathic medicine is aimed at treating the whole body. Dr. Major said, “The human body has developed natural physiological laws that allow for it to thrive. By embracing those natural laws, the body can take care of itself better than any modern medical intervention.”
Likewise, the human body is full of wonderful, healing secrets. Our own blood cells contain the answers to healing and treating scars and stretch marks. We asked Dr. Major what platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections are and how this treatment option goes about actually repairing the body as opposed to simply masking symptoms.
How do PRP injections help with healing the body?
Dr. Major says that PRP injections repair injuries to the body in a manner similar to repairing a building by adding more construction workers to a construction site.
He continues saying, “Our blood is full of healing substances, known as growth factors, which provide the body with the ability to repair injured tissue. These growth factors are stored inside of cells called platelets. A substance known as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is attained by separating a small amount of plasma, which is the colorless fluid in our blood, and then further isolating the plasma that has the highest levels of platelets.”
When PRP is injected into an injured area of the body, it releases the body’s own growth factors in amounts that cause an expedited and very thorough repair.
How effective are PRP injections in treating scars and stretch marks?
Scars and stretch marks are the result of damaged tissue after the body has done all the repair that it can with its normal inflammatory healing response. Regardless of the age of the damaged tissue, PRP will re-engage the body’s inflammatory healing response, but with a much higher level of growth factors. Scars, stretch marks, aging skin tone, and wrinkles can all benefit with the healing growth factors from PRP.
How many PRP treatments are needed for optimal results?
Dr. Major recommends three to five PRP treatments to completely heal most skin, joint, tendon, and ligament damage. Improvement is notable after each treatment. Along with other adjoining pro-metabolic treatments, PRP improves appearance and decreases pain by healing the body with its own cells with minimal discomfort and very little downtime.
Why do you recommend PRP treatment?
PRP regenerates tissues and thereby restores appearance and strength without simply masking the damage or the pain. PRP treatments are the antithesis to palliative treatments that provide temporary relief, such as corticosteroid applications, and are replacing unnecessary surgeries that result in a body with limited function or an artificial appearance.

About Dr. Michael Major, NMD
Dr. Michael Major is a Naturopathic Medical Doctor (NMD). Following a decade-long career as a pilot in the United States Marine Corps, Dr. Major was diagnosed with epilepsy by neurologists at the renowned Johns Hopkins Medical Hospital. His diagnosis came after having seizure number two of what would end up being more than twenty seizures over the next nine months. After Dr. Major became unsatisfied with pharmaceutical intervention that turned his brain off, he researched and found a physiological cause of seizures, applied what he learned, and stopped his seizures from happening overnight. His personal experience drove him to naturopathic medical school and into a profession he was always meant to be a part of. As a NMD, Dr. Major has empathetically chosen to gear his practice toward health optimization through regenerative medicine while focusing on endocrine protocols and regenerative injection therapies. His primary areas of focus include: hormone and endocrine health, regenerative injection therapy, sports medicine and orthopedics, and therapeutic drainage. Dr. Major has a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Mathematics from Baker University Kansas, a Master of Science (MS) degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology Ohio, and graduated as a NMD from the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine Arizona.
